Canadian Roadmap For National Fusion Energy Strategy
On June 11, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) hosted Fusion Day 2024 to unveil its roadmap to a national fusion energy strategy, aimed to position Canada as a global leader in fusion. The roadmap – Fusion Energy for Canada: A Forward-Looking Vision and Call for Action – calls on the government to design, fund, and implement a national fusion strategy. As the global race to commercial fusion deployment accelerates, the time is now. Without strategic national investment at a globally competitive level, Canada risks falling behind and failing to capitalize on economic, social, geopolitical, and decarbonization opportunities that commercial fusion unlocks.
The report outlines opportunities for investment and areas of Canadian strengths to capitalize on. Importantly, it calls for next steps: “key fusion ecosystem players to sit down with the government to discuss, adapt and enhance the preliminary strategy roadmap.”
The FIA applauds CNL and all involved for their work in fostering greater national efforts supporting fusion commercialization, and stands ready to support.
