South Korea Announces KRW 1.2 Trillion to Prioritize Fusion Commercialization

South Korea announced a government project worth KRW 1.2 trillion with the goal of harnessing fusion power. This new initiative, separate from K-STAR and South Korea’s ITER contributions, will focus on ensuring a private sector led fusion ecosystem in the country. The announcement was made on July 22 during a National Nuclear Fusion Committee meeting, chaired by Minister Lee Jong Ho of the Ministry of Science and ICT.

FIA Launches Commercializing Fusion Energy Paper

The global race to commercial fusion power is on. On June 24, the Fusion Industry Association launched our Commercializing Fusion Energy paper, laying out the policy incentives that will attract and accelerate the fusion industry in nations that aim to lead in commercial deployment. Canadian Roadmap For National Fusion Energy Strategy

On June 11, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) hosted Fusion Day 2024 to unveil its roadmap to a national fusion energy strategy, aimed to position Canada as a global leader in fusion. The roadmap – Fusion Energy for Canada: A Forward-Looking Vision and Call for Action – calls on the government to design, fund, and implement a national fusion strategy. As the global race to commercial fusion deployment accelerates, the time is now. Without strategic national investment at a globally competitive level, Canada risks falling behind and failing to capitalize on economic, social, geopolitical, and decarbonization opportunities that commercial fusion unlocks.

House Passes Annual Defense Bill Alongside Guidance Report Including Fusion

On June 14, the U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the annual defense policy bill, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Alongside the bill, the House Committee on Armed Services released a Report on H.R. 8070 with additional views and guidance – including guidance on fusion energy sources, noting that “the committee believes that compact fusion power technologies, if matured to an appropriate level, could provide significant advantages to the Department of Defense.”

G7 Includes Fusion Energy in Leaders’ Communiqué

On June 14, the G7 published the Leaders’ Communiqué, including fusion energy among other areas of collaboration to solve global challenges. In the Communiqué, the Leaders commit to establishing a G7 Working Group on Fusion Energy, and will work together to achieve consistent fusion regulatory approaches. A major step in accelerating global commercial fusion and solidifying fusion regulatory certainty.
