DOE Announces First Genesis Mission Awards Supporting AI-Driven Fusion Research
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the first projects selected under the Genesis Mission, a national initiative that applies artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific discovery across energy, engineering, and national security. Among the initiative’s priority challenge areas is commercial fusion energy, highlighting the growing role of AI in advancing fusion technologies toward commercialization.
Selected research teams will develop AI-enabled scientific workflows using the Genesis Mission Platform, which combines advanced AI tools, high-performance computing, and DOE National Laboratory resources to accelerate research and technology development.
FIA congratulates all of the organizations selected through the first Genesis Mission awards. Several FIA members, partners, and affiliates are leading or participating in projects that will apply AI to address key challenges in commercial fusion energy.

- Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) – AI-4-Gyrotron: Accelerating ECH Technology Delivery for Nuclear Fusion.
- University of Wisconsin–Madison – High-throughput edge AI for real-time, multi-task inference on high-bandwidth plasma fluctuation diagnostics. Type One Energy is a project partner.
- SHINE Technologies – AI-Guided Fuel Cycle Facility Optimization.
- Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) – AI-Enabled Multi-Reference Electrochemical Digital Twin for Autonomous Molten Salt Reactor Operations. TAE Technologies is a project partner.
- Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) – AI-Assisted Manufacturing and Qualification-Ready Digital Traceability for Steel-Composite Nuclear Module Welding and Inspection.
The inclusion of commercial fusion energy among the Genesis Mission’s first awards reflects the increasing importance of artificial intelligence in accelerating scientific discovery, improving engineering workflows, and advancing the technologies needed to bring commercial fusion energy to the grid.
