DOE Announces First Genesis Mission Awards Supporting AI-Driven Fusion Research

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the first projects selected under the Genesis Mission, a national initiative that applies artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific discovery across energy, engineering, and national security. Among the initiative’s priority challenge areas is commercial fusion energy, highlighting the growing role of AI in advancing fusion technologies toward commercialization. 

Selected research teams will develop AI-enabled scientific workflows using the Genesis Mission Platform, which combines advanced AI tools, high-performance computing, and DOE National Laboratory resources to accelerate research and technology development. 

FIA congratulates all of the organizations selected through the first Genesis Mission awards. Several FIA members, partners, and affiliates are leading or participating in projects that will apply AI to address key challenges in commercial fusion energy. 

FIA Members, Partners, and Affiliates Selected:
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) – FADO: Fusion Agentic Design Orchestrator.
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) – AI-Guided Creep-Fatigue Life Prediction for Fusion Structural Materials.
  • University of Rochester – Autonomous Implosion Design and Experimental Co-piloting via Physics-Grounded Agentic AI.
  • Princeton University – Towards a FLARE Digital Twin: Accelerating Experimental Research Using Neural Networks. TAE Technologies is a project contributor.
  • Florida State University – AI-accelerated digital twin for REBCO coated conductor manufacturing in superconducting fusion magnet systems.
  • Acceleron Fusion – Developing a Digital Replica of a Deuterium-Tritium Process Loop for Fusion Fuel Cycle Optimization.
  • Princeton University – Foundation Model Platform for Fusion Energy: A Multi-Modal Multi-Device Learning.
  • Realta Fusion – AI-Enabled Digital Twin for Near-Real-Time Optimization and Decision Support of Fusion NBI Systems. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of Wisconsin–Madison are subawardees.
  • Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) – AI-4-Gyrotron: Accelerating ECH Technology Delivery for Nuclear Fusion.
  • University of Wisconsin–Madison – High-throughput edge AI for real-time, multi-task inference on high-bandwidth plasma fluctuation diagnostics. Type One Energy is a project partner.
  • SHINE Technologies – AI-Guided Fuel Cycle Facility Optimization.
  • Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) – AI-Enabled Multi-Reference Electrochemical Digital Twin for Autonomous Molten Salt Reactor Operations. TAE Technologies is a project partner.
  • Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) – AI-Assisted Manufacturing and Qualification-Ready Digital Traceability for Steel-Composite Nuclear Module Welding and Inspection.

The inclusion of commercial fusion energy among the Genesis Mission’s first awards reflects the increasing importance of artificial intelligence in accelerating scientific discovery, improving engineering workflows, and advancing the technologies needed to bring commercial fusion energy to the grid.

Common Fusion Approaches

Magnetic confinement: Plasma is heated to 100 million °C or more, then squeezed and held in place by strong magnetic fields, allowing many fusion reactions to occur. (Example: tokamaks, stellarators)

Inertial confinement: Tiny fuel pellets are struck by powerful lasers. The outer layer explodes outward, compressing the core to fusion conditions for a few nanoseconds, producing a brief but intense pulse of energy from each pellet. (Example: National Ignition Facility)

Hybrid systems: Combine compression (e.g., from lasers, plasma pistons, or mechanical impact) with moderate magnetic fields to reduce energy losses and improve confinement.

Electrostatic fusion: Uses high electric potentials to accelerate ions toward a central reaction zone, causing them to collide at high energies and fuse. The ions are guided and confined by electric fields rather than magnets, creating a compact environment for fusion reactions.
