European Fusion and Industrial CEOs Call for a EU Fusion Strategy That Ensures Energy Security

On April 28, European fusion and industrial company CEOs sent a letter to leading policymakers at the European Commission, urging the upcoming EU Fusion Strategy to ensure energy security and European leadership in the growing sector.

The open letter warns that Europe is once again facing an energy crisis driven by geopolitical instability and longstanding structural dependencies. It calls for a decisive shift from short-term fixes to a long-term strategy that ensures energy security, technological sovereignty, and sustainable growth. The signatories, CEOs from leading fusion and industrial companies and supported by the FIA, highlight fusion energy as a transformative, clean, and increasingly viable solution. To position Europe at the forefront of the emerging global industry, they urge the EU to adopt an ambitious Fusion Strategy coupled with an action plan that commits budget, mobilises capital, and sets a risk-informed and proportional regulatory pathway.

Common Fusion Approaches

Magnetic confinement: Plasma is heated to 100 million °C or more, then squeezed and held in place by strong magnetic fields, allowing many fusion reactions to occur. (Example: tokamaks, stellarators)

Inertial confinement: Tiny fuel pellets are struck by powerful lasers. The outer layer explodes outward, compressing the core to fusion conditions for a few nanoseconds, producing a brief but intense pulse of energy from each pellet. (Example: National Ignition Facility)

Hybrid systems: Combine compression (e.g., from lasers, plasma pistons, or mechanical impact) with moderate magnetic fields to reduce energy losses and improve confinement.

Electrostatic fusion: Uses high electric potentials to accelerate ions toward a central reaction zone, causing them to collide at high energies and fuse. The ions are guided and confined by electric fields rather than magnets, creating a compact environment for fusion reactions.
