European Parliament Publishes Paper on Fusion
The European Parliament published “Fusion energy: A paradigm shift in power generation for Europe?”, a paper developed at the request of the Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA) and managed by the Scientific Foresight Unit (STOA) within the Directorate-General for Parliamentary Research Services (EPRS).
The paper highlights that fusion energy is rapidly transitioning from long-term research to commercial reality, driven by private-sector breakthroughs promising grid-connected power by the 2030s.
The report acknowledges the surge in commercial progress and urges the EU to adapt accordingly. It gives an overview of the main challenges and opportunities, stressing fusion as a strategic opportunity for Europe, while highlighting the need for:
- flexible regulation,
- sustained investment,
- closer integration between public and private efforts,
- skills and talent, and
- public acceptance and sustainability.
With a new EU strategy on fusion expected in late 2025, the study concluded that fusion can be vital for Europe’s future in global leadership.
