FIA and 60+ Companies Urge Increased Federal Funding for Department of Energy’s Office of Science

Partnering with Governments

The Fusion Industry Association, along with over 60 private companies and other industry organizations– including numerous FIA members and affiliate members– signed a letter in December 2022 in support of funding the Department of Energy’s Office of Science. The letter was addressed to the US Secretary of Energy, the Director for Office of Management and Budget, the Director for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Congressional Appropriators. It calls on President Biden to fund the Office of Science at $9.5 billion, the amount authorized in the CHIPS and Science Act, in FY 2024.

This funding would further drive innovative research and technology development, as the Office of Science brings together teams of industry, academia, and national lab partners to tackle some of the nation’s greatest challenges, leading to some of science’s greatest successes.

“As the nation’s primary sponsor of research in the physical sciences, the Office of Science plays a vital role in the American scientific ecosystem with a proven model for success in discovery and innovation.”

The Office of Sciences has been a key proponent of fusion energy research and development– leading to the recent breakthrough at the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The letter supports funding fusion energy research and development at the full level authorized in the CHIPS and Science Act.

“As we look to the future, the DOE Office of Science is a leader in advancing emerging technologies, including quantum information science, computing and networking, artificial intelligence, commercial fusion energy, beyond lithium-ion battery chemistries, bio-energy, and other future energy technologies, microelectronics, next-generation high performance computing, advanced communications networks, and engineering biology. These investments are needed to maintain American scientific and technology leadership over the next several decades.”

Common Fusion Approaches

Magnetic confinement: Plasma is heated to 100 million °C or more, then squeezed and held in place by strong magnetic fields, allowing many fusion reactions to occur. (Example: tokamaks, stellarators)

Inertial confinement: Tiny fuel pellets are struck by powerful lasers. The outer layer explodes outward, compressing the core to fusion conditions for a few nanoseconds, producing a brief but intense pulse of energy from each pellet. (Example: National Ignition Facility)

Hybrid systems: Combine compression (e.g., from lasers, plasma pistons, or mechanical impact) with moderate magnetic fields to reduce energy losses and improve confinement.

Electrostatic fusion: Uses high electric potentials to accelerate ions toward a central reaction zone, causing them to collide at high energies and fuse. The ions are guided and confined by electric fields rather than magnets, creating a compact environment for fusion reactions.
