FIA Congratulates Congressional Bipartisan Fusion Caucus

Partnering with Governments

Washington, D.C., February 18, 2021 – The Fusion Industry Association (FIA) is excited to welcome the newly formed Congressional Fusion Caucus in the 117th Congress. The Fusion Caucus, chaired by Virginia Congressman Don Beyer, was joined by Reps. Eddie Bernice Johnston, Peter Welch, Chuck Fleischmann, Susan Wild, Bonnie Watson Coleman, Katie Porter, Elaine Luria, Bill Foster, Katherine Clark, Jerry McNerney.

FIA Executive Director Andrew Holland participated in the launch, along with member company CTFusion CEO Derek Sutherland. Common themes discussed in the kick-off call included a need to address future energy problems today and educating members of Congress on the science behind fusion energy.

Investment in emerging technologies like fusion will help the U.S. meet the ever-growing energy demands of tomorrow.

FIA is excited to work with the Congressional Fusion Caucus to educate members about the science behind fusion energy, dispel any misconceptions, and continue to advocate for increased funding through private-public partnerships.

FIA has been a leader in educating the public on fusion energy while continuing to advocate for increased funding for research and development. FIA is a collaborative effort, combining scientific, political, government, and media expertise to support its member companies.

Common Fusion Approaches

Magnetic confinement: Plasma is heated to 100 million °C or more, then squeezed and held in place by strong magnetic fields, allowing many fusion reactions to occur. (Example: tokamaks, stellarators)

Inertial confinement: Tiny fuel pellets are struck by powerful lasers. The outer layer explodes outward, compressing the core to fusion conditions for a few nanoseconds, producing a brief but intense pulse of energy from each pellet. (Example: National Ignition Facility)

Hybrid systems: Combine compression (e.g., from lasers, plasma pistons, or mechanical impact) with moderate magnetic fields to reduce energy losses and improve confinement.

Electrostatic fusion: Uses high electric potentials to accelerate ions toward a central reaction zone, causing them to collide at high energies and fuse. The ions are guided and confined by electric fields rather than magnets, creating a compact environment for fusion reactions.
