FIA Delegation in Berlin, Germany

From the FIA, Partnering with Governments

On September 18 and 19, the FIA completed a series of meetings and discussions in Berlin, Germany to highlight the opportunities for fusion energy investment and development in Germany.

On September 18, FIA held a Transatlantic Fusion Workshop with discussions centered on international cooperation and partnerships, both between public and private, as well as accelerating the race to fusion energy, led by the private sector companies that are moving quickly. Participation included representatives from U.S. and German government, National Labs, FIA members based in Germany including Proxima Fusion, Focused Energy and Marvel Fusion, as well as FIA members from across the world including Renaissance Fusion, TAE Technologies, Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Thea Energy, Kyoto Fusioneering, Tokamak Energy, Fuse and Type One Energy.

On September 19, FIA CEO Andrew Holland joined a panel discussion with leaders from the fusion industry, private sector and government at the 185th Energiegespräch am Reichstag hosted by the Clean Energy Forum.

Germany has included fusion energy in its High Tech Agenda, and will soon release its fusion strategy, detailing new plans forward. For Germany, fusion must be a part of its plan to reindustrialize and build new infrastructure and security. The FIA and our members stand ready to support an ambitious agenda and investment.

Common Fusion Approaches

Magnetic confinement: Plasma is heated to 100 million °C or more, then squeezed and held in place by strong magnetic fields, allowing many fusion reactions to occur. (Example: tokamaks, stellarators)

Inertial confinement: Tiny fuel pellets are struck by powerful lasers. The outer layer explodes outward, compressing the core to fusion conditions for a few nanoseconds, producing a brief but intense pulse of energy from each pellet. (Example: National Ignition Facility)

Hybrid systems: Combine compression (e.g., from lasers, plasma pistons, or mechanical impact) with moderate magnetic fields to reduce energy losses and improve confinement.

Electrostatic fusion: Uses high electric potentials to accelerate ions toward a central reaction zone, causing them to collide at high energies and fuse. The ions are guided and confined by electric fields rather than magnets, creating a compact environment for fusion reactions.
