FIA Hosts First-Ever Fusion Supply Chain Trade Show

Building a Global Fusion Energy Industry, From the FIA

On June 23-24 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Fusion Industry Association hosted its first-ever Fusion Supply Chain Trade Show. The sold-out event brought together more than 50 exhibitors and 270 attendees from across the global fusion ecosystem, including suppliers, developers, manufacturers, policymakers, researchers, investors, and other industry stakeholders.

Held alongside the release of FIA’s 2026 Fusion Industry Supply Chain Report, the event provided a forum to strengthen partnerships, showcase capabilities, and discuss the technologies, manufacturing capacity, and supply chain investments needed to support commercial fusion deployment.

Some highlights:

  • Exhibition hall – Over 50 exhibitors showcased the technologies, products, and services supporting commercial fusion. The exhibition created opportunities for fusion developers and suppliers to establish new partnerships, strengthen existing relationships, and connect with companies representing every stage of the industrial supply chain.
  • The release of the 2026 Fusion Industry Supply Chain Report – The report provides the fourth annual snapshot of the opportunities and challenges shaping the fusion supply chain and highlights growing partnerships, stronger supplier engagement, and the critical technologies needed to scale in support of deployment.
  • Welcome remarks and a video message from Senator Martin Heinrich – Senator Heinrich highlighted the importance of fusion to New Mexico’s economy and America’s energy future, emphasizing the role of domestic supply chains, public-private partnerships, and long-term investment in advancing fusion commercialization. He underscored New Mexico’s unique position as a hub for fusion innovation, built on decades of leadership from the state’s national laboratories, research institutions, and growing private-sector ecosystem.
  • Keynote address from New Mexico Cabinet Secretary Rob Black – Secretary Black highlighted New Mexico’s long-standing leadership in fusion research and innovation and the state’s growing role in supporting commercial fusion through research institutions, manufacturing, workforce development, and partnerships across industry and government.
  • Panel discussion on Global Supply Chain Scaling – Moderated by Pierpaolo Bianchino, Business Developer at SIMIC S.p.A., the discussion featured Jen Arrigo, Senior Advisor, Office of Fusion, U.S. Department of Energy; Dr. Scott Hsu, Fusion Partner at Lowercarbon Capital; Dr. Valerie Jamieson, Development Manager, Fusion Cluster at the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA); and Matt Platano, Senior Director of Supply Chain at Commonwealth Fusion Systems. The conversation examined supplier readiness, manufacturing capacity, investment, long-term planning, and global collaboration, emphasizing the importance of developing a resilient, globally competitive supply chain capable of supporting commercial fusion power plants.
  • Panel discussion on New Mexico’s Investment in Fusion – Moderated by Julia Wise, External Relations & Business Development at the New Mexico Fusion Trade Association, the discussion featured Dr. Mark Gilmore, Plasma Scientist and Professor at New Mexico State University; Dr. Will Regan, Founder & Chief Scientist at Pacific Fusion; Bruce Brown, Strategic Climate Initiatives at the New Mexico Investment Council; and Kathleen McDonald, Business Development Program Manager at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The discussion focused on how state government, national laboratories, private industry, and regional organizations can work together to strengthen New Mexico’s position as a leading hub for fusion innovation while contributing to the broader global fusion supply chain.

Common Fusion Approaches

Magnetic confinement: Plasma is heated to 100 million °C or more, then squeezed and held in place by strong magnetic fields, allowing many fusion reactions to occur. (Example: tokamaks, stellarators)

Inertial confinement: Tiny fuel pellets are struck by powerful lasers. The outer layer explodes outward, compressing the core to fusion conditions for a few nanoseconds, producing a brief but intense pulse of energy from each pellet. (Example: National Ignition Facility)

Hybrid systems: Combine compression (e.g., from lasers, plasma pistons, or mechanical impact) with moderate magnetic fields to reduce energy losses and improve confinement.

Electrostatic fusion: Uses high electric potentials to accelerate ions toward a central reaction zone, causing them to collide at high energies and fuse. The ions are guided and confined by electric fields rather than magnets, creating a compact environment for fusion reactions.
