FIA Job Opening: Executive Director for Europe

Overview

The Fusion Industry Association (FIA) is seeking an Executive Director for Europe to lead the FIA’s overall European operations, strategy, and organizational growth. This senior executive role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of clean energy by driving high-level political engagement, expanding the Association’s presence, and supporting organizational growth. Working alongside our EU Director, who focuses on policy and advocacy in Brussels, the Executive Director for Europe will advance the FIA’s mission by fostering strategic partnerships and shaping energy policy across the continent.

The FIA is the leading voice of the private fusion energy industry, representing the 45 companies from around the world working to commercialize clean, safe, and limitless energy from fusion, as well as over 115 affiliate members – the suppliers, end-users, and nonprofits working in support. Founded in 2021, the FIA is a dynamic, fast-growing policy and advocacy organization with global reach. We unite science, industry, and policy to accelerate the path to fusion energy on a timeline relevant to today’s climate and energy challenges.

As the FIA’s lead representative in Europe, the Director will engage directly with national governments, EU institutions, and international organizations such as the IAEA, IEA, and ITER. The successful candidate will design and champion a coordinated strategy to elevate fusion as a strategic energy and innovation priority across national and multilateral forums. This role reports to FIA’s CEO and collaborates closely with the EU Director, other FIA staff, member companies and FIA’s Europe Committee.

Responsibilities

• Regional Leadership and Strategy
  • Define and execute the long-term strategic vision for the FIA’s presence and impact across Europe, in alignment with the organization’s global goals.
  • Build high-level relationships with national governments, energy ministries, parliaments, and innovation agencies across key countries such as Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Spain, and others.
  • Promote national-level strategies, funding programs, and regulatory frameworks that advance private fusion development and commercialization.
  • Shape national narratives that position fusion as a critical clean energy and innovation solution.
• High-Level Advocacy and Member Relations
  • Drive membership recruitment and retention efforts across Europe, expanding the FIA’s network of private fusion developers, supply chain partners, and utilities.
  • Act as the unified voice of the fusion industry to the media and stakeholders across business, government, and regulatory bodies.
• Engage with EU Institutions and European Regional Bodies
  • Support FIA’s efforts in Brussels to advocate for fusion-friendly regulation, public funding, and R&D coordination through EU bodies.
  • Coordinate with national governments to ensure that EU-level decisions reflect national momentum.
• Lead FIA’s Multilateral Engagement
  • Lead FIA’s engagement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Energy Agency (IEA), and other relevant multilateral bodies to ensure recognition and support for private fusion initiatives.
  • Advocate for frameworks that facilitate international collaboration, data access, and private sector participation in publicly funded projects.
• Drive Funding and Partnership Opportunities
  • Advocate for access to both EU-level and national public funding instruments, including Horizon Europe, Euratom, EIC, and country-specific innovation funds.
  • Promote public-private partnerships that support commercialization-stage fusion companies.
  • Build coalitions with cleantech, deeptech, and energy innovation stakeholders to align funding, policy, and regulatory priorities.
• Execute Strategy and Amplify FIA’s Voice
  • Coordinate in support of FIA events, advocacy, and public engagements across European cities and international venues.
  • Monitor and analyze developments in European and multilateral policy relevant to fusion, providing briefings and strategic recommendations to FIA leadership and members.

Qualifications

• 12–15+ years of experience in energy policy, international affairs, or public advocacy in Europe, with a strong understanding of both national and multilateral policy systems.
• Demonstrated experience managing teams, budgets, and complex organizational structures across multiple European jurisdictions.
• Demonstrated success engaging with European governments, EU institutions, and international energy organizations.
• Strong network across government, industry, and multilateral forums in clean energy, innovation, or advanced technology sectors.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in additional European languages is necessary
• Strategic, proactive, and able to operate independently in a fast-paced, global policy environment.
