FIA Provides Feedback to the European Commission’s Call for Evidence on the EU Fusion Strategy

From the FIA, Partnering with Governments

The Fusion Industry Association (FIA) has provided feedback to the EU Commission’s Call For Evidence on the proposed EU Fusion Strategy. Given the rapid advances being made in fusion, this is a timely and necessary step by the Commission to develop an European Fusion Strategy that can help ensure Europe’s leadership in the global fusion race.

In our submitted feedback, the FIA draws attention to three key challenges that must be addressed to accelerate commercial fusion deployment in Europe:

  1. Absence of a coherent and enabling regulatory framework across Member States,
  2. Lack of targeted funding mechanisms and instruments for commercial fusion, and
  3. Limited involvement of private fusion companies in EU-level strategic planning and coordination activities.

The FIA feedback provides solutions across the eight pillars of the EU Fusion Strategy, as proposed by the European Commission, such as encouraging public-private partnerships and developing a workforce strategy. The European Union currently leads in some critical sectors of the global fusion supply chain, but this advantage should not be taken for granted. The Commission should build on this leadership to solidify its position and secure Europe’s competitive advantage and global leadership.
