FIA Publishes White Paper on the Importance of Open Public-Sector Data

From the FIA, Partnering with Governments

Collaboration between public and private sectors accelerates industry. The FIA’s new white paper “Opening Public-Sector Data to Empower the Fusion Industry” provides recommendations on how to accelerate development by improving the public sector’s data openness, standardization, and incentives.

Accessible fusion data is crucial to understanding and optimizing the performance of fusion machines being developed today. Data from fusion experiments empowered a million-fold improvement in fusion triple product over the first 50 years of development.

To make data available and accelerate the overcoming of engineering challenges faced in development, the FIA recommends the following:

  1. Openness: All data in fusion that is not part of an organization’s sensitive IP should be made open to the fusion economy, within the constraints of their missions.
  2. Standards: Research bodies should adhere to common standards regarding the storing and structuring of data, including metadata and storage format. These policies should be transparent, and consistent throughout the organization.
  3. Incentives: Enable and resource teams at the institutions responsible for managing and ensuring accessibility of data.

As fusion evolves into a global interconnected industry, it is important to set the precedent for proper fusion data stewardship.
