FIA Releases Position Paper on Efficient Permitting for Fusion
The Fusion Industry Association has released a new position paper: Efficient Permitting for Fusion. With 89% of fusion developers confident they will bring fusion power to market by the 2030s or sooner, the paper outlines permitting policies needed to support the efficient deployment of fusion power plants.
The paper calls for permitting processes that are expeditious, right-sized, and appropriate for the project. Fusion is the ultimate firm, dispatchable, low-carbon energy source. It is safe and energy dense, enabling
fusion power plants to be flexibly sited nearer to population centers and electricity demand without requiring significant land use and minimizing its environmental footprint. Fusion energy is anticipated to have lower environmental impacts compared to currently deployed forms of electricity generation, and permitting should reflect that nature.
Fusion power plants must be eligible for, to the fullest extent possible, the same siting, permitting, grid interconnection, or infrastructure development advantages currently afforded to clean, renewable, baseload and dispatchable energy projects.
