FIA CEO Andrew Holland Highlights Key Reports at IAEA Fusion Webinar
On Wednesday, March 19th, Fusion Industry Association (FIA) CEO Andrew Holland joined a webinar hosted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where he presented several FIA reports, including the 2024 Global Fusion Industry Report, 2024 Supply Chain Report, and Fusion Workforce Report. The session not only provided a snapshot of the FIA’s work and priorities in the sector but also offered a deeper dive into the latest industry developments.
In his presentation, Holland outlined the main takeaways from the 2024 Global Fusion Industry Report. He provided an overview of the major developments over the past year, which have included strengthened public-private partnerships, increased globalization in the field, and an increase in investment. Holland also laid out a comprehensive fusion timeline, highlighting the milestones required to move fusion to commercialization and broad deployment.
In addition, Holland presented key findings from the Supply Chain Report, which highlighted the growing commitment from supply chain companies to support fusion energy. However, he also emphasized the ongoing challenges in strengthening and expanding the supply chain. To address these issues, Holland proposed several solutions, including enhancing supply chain capacity, providing clearer market signals, securing long-term policy and public funding, and establishing forums for collaboration.
The Fusion Workforce Report revealed that the fusion industry is experiencing significant growth in job opportunities – within fusion companies, enabling tech, and across the supply chain. Holland pointed out that the workforce needed to support fusion development is increasingly diverse, with a broad range of skills required beyond just plasma physics. This shift underscores the movement of fusion from its R&D phase to a growing industry, coupled with the need for a multidisciplinary workforce to meet the demands of expansion.
