Fusion Industry Calls for Greater Transparency and Input in Upcoming EU Fusion Strategy

From the FIA, Partnering with Governments

The Fusion Industry Association, alongside Pro-Fusion, INEUSTAR, and European Fusion Association, sent a joint industry letter to the European Commission calling for greater transparency and industry engagement in the development of the forthcoming EU Fusion Strategy.

Industry welcomes the Commission’s recognition of fusion as a strategic technology and a “moonshot” project for Europe. However, the letter raises concerns that industry has had limited visibility into the policy direction of the Strategy, despite companies and the wider industrial ecosystem being responsible for financing, building, operating and supplying future fusion facilities.

With the Strategy set to play an important role in Europe’s approach to fusion industrialisation and commercialisation, the letter asks the Commission to take two practical steps before its publication:

  • Provide industry with greater visibility into the key policy choices currently under consideration, with an opportunity to provide feedback on the Strategy before adoption.
  • Establish a structured exchange with the fusion industry on the policy choices contained in the Strategy ahead of its adoption.

These requests are not intended to delay the Strategy, but to ensure it benefits from the perspective of the industrial actors who will ultimately translate its objectives into investment, infrastructure and commercial deployment.

As global competition to commercialise fusion accelerates, Europe’s fusion companies and supply chains are already investing private capital and building capabilities across the continent. Ensuring industry has a voice in the development of the EU Fusion Strategy is critical to secure Europe’s competitiveness in commercial fusion.

Common Fusion Approaches

Magnetic confinement: Plasma is heated to 100 million °C or more, then squeezed and held in place by strong magnetic fields, allowing many fusion reactions to occur. (Example: tokamaks, stellarators)

Inertial confinement: Tiny fuel pellets are struck by powerful lasers. The outer layer explodes outward, compressing the core to fusion conditions for a few nanoseconds, producing a brief but intense pulse of energy from each pellet. (Example: National Ignition Facility)

Hybrid systems: Combine compression (e.g., from lasers, plasma pistons, or mechanical impact) with moderate magnetic fields to reduce energy losses and improve confinement.

Electrostatic fusion: Uses high electric potentials to accelerate ions toward a central reaction zone, causing them to collide at high energies and fuse. The ions are guided and confined by electric fields rather than magnets, creating a compact environment for fusion reactions.
