G7 Energy Ministers Urge International Collaboration on Fusion
On October 31 at the G7 Energy and Environment Ministers’ Meeting in Toronto, the Ministers issued a “Statement on Nuclear and Fusion Energy,” which recognized the progress across the global fusion ecosystem and underscored the importance of sustained international cooperation around R&D and regulatory harmonization.
“Looking ahead, we emphasize the continued necessity of sharing best practices, cooperation amongst trusted fusion-relevant Research and Development centres and harmonization of standards as well as consistent approaches to fusion regulations as appropriate, which would enable the deployment of fusion energy technologies.”
G7 Energy Ministers’ statement
The G7’s commitment to harmonized fusion efforts has been supercharged by the creation of the G7 Working Group on Fusion Energy, started under the 2024 Italian G7 Presidency and continued by Canadian leadership.
As industry moves toward commercialization, international collaboration on many levels is key to accelerate broad deployment. Two participating nations of the G7 – the U.S. and U.K. – have already solidified fusion regulations separate from nuclear fission. This is a crucial distinction, accounting for the distinctly lower risk profile of fusion technologies. Ensuring consistent national-level regulatory approaches will accelerate the deployment of first-of-a-kind fusion power plants and enable the widespread adoption of fusion power.
The FIA applauds the G7 Energy Ministers for their leadership and looks forward to engaging in further multilateral discussions on the importance of risk-appropriate and consistent regulatory frameworks and standardization.
