Germany Prioritizes Fusion in High-Tech Agenda

From the FIA, Partnering with Governments

On July 30, Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research unveiled the “Hightech Agenda Deutschland,” a national innovation strategy that identifies fusion as one of six technologies critical to the country’s future. By making fusion a strategic priority and integrating it into its broader industrial and energy policy, Germany is reinforcing its commitment to lead in fusion globally.

In the section on “Fusion and Climate-Neutral Energy Production”, the agenda outlines its first goal: to make “Germany a leading innovation hub for fusion technologies. We want to make German companies global market leaders in fusion and create jobs.” The agenda includes key upcoming actions in support:

  • A strategic, long-term “Fusion Action Plan” will be presented to the Federal Government by the end of 2025, charting a path to a fusion power plant in Germany.
  • A Fusion Energy Research and Innovation Roadmap (FIRE) will follow by late 2026, mapping the core technologies and milestones for commercial deployment.
  • Dedicated hubs for magnetic and laser fusion will begin concept development this year, supporting infrastructure expansion and demonstration projects for fusion power plants.
  • Targeted Funding for fusion approaches and technologies, scaling infrastructure, building supply chains, and integrating fusion into the energy system.

We are taking Germany to the next level – ‘Made in Germany’ should stand for technological excellence worldwide.

Dorothee Bär, Federal Minister for Research, Technology and Space

The FIA looks forward to continuing its engagement and support for Germany’s advancing fusion ecosystem. We are proud to support Germany-based FIA member companies accelerating the momentum, including Proxima Fusion, Focused Energy, Marvel Fusion, and Gauss Fusion.
