Germany Releases Fusion Roadmap For High-Tech Agenda
On May 20, Germany released Roadmaps for the six key technologies – including fusion – within the recently launched High-Tech Agenda. The High-Tech Agenda is “the Federal Government’s central innovation policy initiative aimed at strengthening competitiveness, value creation, and technological sovereignty.” The Roadmaps are the latest step in implementing the Agenda.
The Agenda focuses on “six priority key technologies that are crucial for [Germany’s] future viability”: fusion, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, microelectronics, biotechnology, and climate-neutral energy and mobility. The sectors are expected to strengthen Germany’s competitiveness while reducing reliance on foreign technologies and supply chains.
For fusion, the Roadmap is not only another important signal of political support, but a plan for Germany to lead in commercial fusion worldwide and for “the world’s first commercial fusion power plant to be built in Germany.” The country has emerged as a leading fusion hub, supported by a strong research base, a growing private sector, and increasing government support for fusion’s role in a future clean energy system.
Below is the Roadmap in full.
