UK Government Responds on New National Policy Statement, Paving the Way for Fusion Power Plants

On July 17, the UK Government published its response to the consultation on National Policy Statement (NPS) EN-8, which was launched in May 2024 to streamline the process and provide clarity on the planning of fusion power plants. In its response, the Government focuses on enabling the delivery of fusion power plants, highlighting near-term economic opportunity and explicitly recognizing that private companies plan to deliver commercial fusion plants within the 2030s.

The UK Government’s designation of fusion energy as a key focus in its newly released Industrial Strategy is important. UK Department for Energy and Net Zero Publishes Scoping Consultation for Fusion Facility Planning Process

The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published a scoping consultation on National Policy Statement EN8 – the policy statement which will guide the process for fusion facilities in the UK. Following the Energy Act 2023 confirmation that fusion facilities will be regulated separately from fission in the UK, the Fusion Energy NPS will provide further clarity on the fusion planning process for developers and communities – an important step in the development of the UK’s fusion sector.
