On 11 June, the Fusion Industry Association (FIA), together with Fusion for Energy (F4E), hosted a session titled Powering the Future: Securing Europe’s Leadership in Fusion Energy as part of the 2025 edition of the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW). As the European Commission’s flagship event on energy and the largest conference in Europe dedicated to renewables and energy efficiency, EUSEW offered a high-profile platform to spotlight fusion’s growing strategic role in the EU’s energy agenda.

On March 17th, the Fusion Industry Association (FIA) submitted feedback to the European Commission’s public consultation on the upcoming EU Startup and Scaleup Strategy. The Strategy, set to be adopted this year, is expected to address the difficulties that European start-ups and scale-ups face in accessing capital, markets, services, infrastructure as well as talent needed to enable them to thrive in Europe and compete globally.

FIA Urges the European Commission to List Fusion as Stand-Alone Under the Net-Zero Industry Act

On February 20, the Fusion Industry Association (FIA) submitted its feedback to the European Commission on a draft delegated act under the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA). The NZIA, which came into force in June 2024, puts the EU on track to strengthen its domestic manufacturing capacities of key clean technologies. The Act focuses on 19 different net-zero technologies listed in its Annex, including a category called “other nuclear technologies” that currently includes fusion energy. The draft delegated act aims to amend the NZIA Annex by clearly defining, for each technology, the final products and key components used in their production.

On 5 February, the European Parliament hosted a landmark hearing on Europe’s leadership in fusion energy, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers to assess the current landscape and discuss the steps needed to ensure Europe remains at the global forefront of bringing fusion to the grid. FIA Director for Europe Cyrille Mai Thanh joined to give an overview of the global fusion industry and outline key areas of opportunity for European policy.

European Parliament to Host Hearing on “Europe’s leadership in fusion energy”

On Wednesday, February 5 in Brussels, the European Parliament will host a public hearing to discuss “Europe’s leadership in fusion energy.” The hearing will be hosted by MEP Hidlegard Bentele (EPP, Germany) and MEP Pascal Arimont (EPP, Belgium). FIA EU Director Cyrille Mai Thanh will join to give a presentation on the status of the fusion industry and developments on commercialization. Other speakers include representatives from FIA member companies Marvel Fusion, Proxima Fusion, Novatron, and Eni; as well as representatives from the European Commission, Iter Organization, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Fusion for Energy.

European Parliament Holds its First Debate on Fusion Energy

On 20 January, the European Parliament Plenary held its first debate on fusion energy titled “Powering Europe’s Future – Advancing the Fusion Industry for Energy Independence and Innovation.” It focused on the need for Europe to remain a leader in fusion energy on the global stage, competitiveness concerns, research and innovation, public-private partnerships, the ITER project, and commercialization prospects.
