FIA Submits Feedback to European Commission on Advanced Materials Act

The Fusion Industry Association’s feedback to the European Commission regarding the Advanced Materials Act welcomes the opportunity to work in partnership with the EU on achieving strategic autonomy on advanced materials. For progress to continue, the FIA calls on the European Commission to initiate a European Fusion Materials Roadmap, developed in tandem with the Advanced Materials Act.
Prioritisation of strategic research, innovation, and pilot-scale production, including for advanced steels and other advanced alloys.
Strengthening of EU production capabilities for high-purity copper, superconductors, ceramics, and composite materials critical to fusion systems.
Support for qualification pipelines for irradiation-resistant composites and structural materials.
Establishing regulatory and testing frameworks that shorten time-to-market for advanced alloys in fusion-adjacent applications.
Enhancing digital design capabilities, including modelling, simulation, and data infrastructure for materials under extreme conditions.
Enabling regulatory sandboxes supporting the safe testing of novel materials.
To maximise impact, further attention could be given to ensuring long-term dedicated funding and effective coordination across Member States.
Strong support for pilot and demonstration infrastructures, skills development will be essential to translate innovation into large-scale industrial deployment.
Promoting circularity and recycling pathways for high-purity metals and fusion-relevant materials, in line with the Act’s sustainability objectives.

Alongside the Advanced Materials Act, a dedicated fusion roadmap is needed to ensure that advanced materials continue to develop, making fusion a closer reality.

We look forward to continuing working with leaders at the European Union and other partners to accelerate deployment.
