Professor Dennis Whyte has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), taking up the role this autumn. On May 27, Members of European Parliament (MEPs) sent a letter to European Commissioners Dan Jørgensen and Ekaterina Zaharieva urging the pending EU Fusion Strategy to be delivered urgently, accompanied by a clear Action Plan, concrete timelines, and funding commitments. Coordinated by the FIA, the signatories include MEPs Pascal Arimont, Hildegard Bentele, Kris Van Dijck, Matej Tonin, Nicola Procaccini, Andrea Wechsler, Ondrej Krutilek, Angelika Niebler, Susana Solís Pérez, Bart Groothuis, and Christophe Grudler.
On May 20, Germany released Roadmaps for the six key technologies – including fusion – within the recently launched High-Tech Agenda. The High-Tech Agenda is “the Federal Government’s central innovation policy initiative aimed at strengthening competitiveness, value creation, and technological sovereignty.” The Roadmaps are the latest step in implementing the Agenda.
On May 18, Germany announced its participation in a new Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) focused on “Innovative Core Technologies” in support of fusion. The initiative marks another significant step in European efforts to accelerate commercial fusion deployment.

The Fusion Industry Association’s feedback to the European Commission regarding the Advanced Materials Act welcomes the opportunity to work in partnership with the EU on achieving strategic autonomy on advanced materials. Promoting circularity and recycling pathways for high-purity metals and fusion-relevant materials, in line with the Act’s sustainability objectives.
Alongside the Advanced Materials Act, a dedicated fusion roadmap is needed to ensure that advanced materials continue to develop, making fusion a closer reality.
