The European Commission released its 2026 Work Programme on October 20. The programme, titled “Europe’s independence moment,” includes an explicit commitment to fusion, and more broadly signals the strategic shift toward greater autonomy and resilience, placing innovation at the core of its agenda.
On 3 September, the European Commission unveiled its proposal for the next Euratom research programme (2028–2032), setting a budget of €6.7 billion – a significant increase compared to the current €1.98 billion. The proposal forms part of the EU’s next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and will cover a five-year period starting in 2028.
The Fusion Industry Association (FIA) has provided feedback to the EU Commission’s Call For Evidence on the proposed EU Fusion Strategy. Given the rapid advances being made in fusion, this is a timely and necessary step by the Commission to develop an European Fusion Strategy that can help ensure Europe’s leadership in the global fusion race.
On March 17th, the Fusion Industry Association (FIA) submitted feedback to the European Commission’s public consultation on the upcoming EU Startup and Scaleup Strategy. The Strategy, set to be adopted this year, is expected to address the difficulties that European start-ups and scale-ups face in accessing capital, markets, services, infrastructure as well as talent needed to enable them to thrive in Europe and compete globally.

On November 21, the European Parliament adopted its position on the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA), amending the initial proposal of the Commission to include “fusion energy technologies” among the net-zero technologies in their aims to boost decarbonization efforts in Europe. The Act sets a target for Europe to produce 40% of its annual deployment needs in net-zero technologies by 2030, to capture 25% of the global market value for these technologies, and to address challenges in scaling up these technologies’ manufacturing capacities.
