U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Submits Fusion Regulations Rulemaking Report to Congress
On March 23, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Committee (NRC) submitted its report “All Planned NRC Rulemaking Activities Related to Fusion Machines” to the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations and the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations. The report details all ongoing and planned projects by the NRC for fusion regulations.
The NRC developed this report as directed by the explanatory statement accompanying the Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act, 2026. The explanatory statement directed the NRC to “provide notification… outlining all planned rule-making activities related to fusion machines.”
The report follows the NRC’s recent publication of its Proposed Rule and Guidance for Fusion Regulatory Framework and is the latest step in the path to solidifying fusion regulations in the US. FIA thanks the NRC and Congress for their collaborative work throughout the process.
