The invention of the telephone, the advent of flight, and landing on the moon - all of these grand challenges were achieved in the foreground of an intense competition to be the first. In this spirit, the XPRIZE competition has been instrumental in advancing critical technologies and launching new industries to bring about “radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity.” Fusion is perfectly paired to this mission.
Since the 1950s, producing fusion has been commonplace. Today's challenge is for an economically practical fusion generator concept to generate more energy than it consumes or NET POWER. As with the Wright Brothers' first flight, achieving demonstration net power will be a momentous historical event that transitions fusion from science into engineering. This sea change will mobilize capital, utilities, and governments to rapidly deploy fusion power onto the electrical grid.
The Fusion Consortium is sponsoring the development of a Fusion XPRIZE to reach economical net power faster, catalyze investment in fusion R&D, and boost public involvement.
As the first step, the Fusion Consortium is entering fusion as a theme for the 2019 cohort of the XPRIZE Visioneering Program. Visioneering is a six-month process devoted to the design of an XPRIZE and securing a major sponsor for the prize purse. It culminates in the Visioneers Summit, where luminaries gather to decide which teams are "Ready to Launch." Public crowdsourcing takes place during the XPRIZE design and competitor solicitation phase.
